Instead of toiling away in an office, how would you like to work in a casino around people who are having fun?
If the lure of luck appeals to you more than the call of the cubicle, a career in gaming might be for you. |
The growth of the gaming industry over the next decade in the Far East region will create a great demand for skilled casino employees. While casinos had long been established in Malaysia, Macau, South Korea, and the Philippines, it was the western continents that attracted patrons from all over the globe. Up until a few years ago, Las Vegas hailed as the undisputed industry leader. That is until Macau ended its government-issued monopoly license in 2002, opening up to foreign casino gaming operators notably from Las Vegas and by 2006 eclipsed the legendry Vegas strip itself as the casino gambling capital of the world.
Our very own Singapore had rolled the dice on legalised gambling approving two Integrated Resorts (IRs) scheduled to be fully operational in 2010. Not to be left out, other countries in the region are toying with the idea of IRs having observed the economical gains it has evidently produced for Macau. New entries are casinos that have sprouted at borders of Thailand in Poipet, Cambodia, the Naga Resort in Vietnam. It has been widely reported in the media that Taiwan, Japan and India discussed the possibility of entering into the fray. Asia Pacific without a doubt is the most promising market for the expansion of the global casino gaming industry.
With the launching of the Integrated Resorts near fruition, the search for suitable candidates has commenced in Singapore. Casinos apply stringent selection processes to select knowledgeable and hardworking employees with great personality to boot. There are many who are eager to seek employment in the best paying jobs. 1200 graduates trained by ICG is a testimonial supporting the tremendous interest displayed in this lucrative career. Most graduates have already secured employment with the IRs and casinos abroad successfully. |

In today’s world where the average level of education attained by people in all sectors is rising, a main concern among aspiring casino employees is whether conventional education or qualifications will meet the job requirements of gaming operators or adequately prepare them for career advancement beyond the entry level. |
Mr. Ramachandar Siva, co-founder and CEO of ICG School of Casino & Hospitality Management, who is a seasoned casino professional after spending 17 years with the Genting Group provided an explanation to the situation. He judged that conventional formal education ( traditional diplomas and degrees ) may in some cases depending on the field studied serve a long term purpose of career growth upon starting at entry level positions in the casino but it may not guarantee a smooth transition into the entry level positions when the IRs open. Where the casino operations is concerned, he emphasised that the casino operators will need employees with skills in dealing and supervising casino table games to ease their start-up efforts. A professional casino education programme focusing on actual job function aspects will serve the purpose better for job seekers and casino operators. Taking a different but much more logical approach, ICG School of Casino & Hospitality Management, Mr. Rama’s brainchild, was established to cater for this need. |
 |
Having held the position of Vice President, Casino Training & Manpower with the Genting group, Mr. Rama capitalized on his inside knowledge of casino operations to create a much more relevant casino education for the public. In June 2006, ICG offered its Certificate in Dealing Casino Games, (CDCG) as the first professional Croupier certification course in Asia. Graduates with this certificate would be able to deal the 3 major casino games, namely Roulette, Baccarat and Blackjack. To further enhance their employability, the course included Casino Customer Service, Inter-Personal Skills, Grooming & Work Etiquette, Basic Game Protection and Basic Casino Mathematics to ensure that the course exceeded the expectations of casino operators and meet the “professional certification” criteria.
ICG also offers the Certificate in Dealing Poker Games for those who wish to gain skills and knowledge in the game of poker. |

Upon gauging the learning capabilities and quality of students have who completed the basic certification course, Mr. Rama concluded that a person with no casino work experience is able to meet the stringent requirements of entry level casino jobs and capable of more. This observation coupled with demand from the public lead to the development of a table games supervision and gaming pit management training programme which was launched in January 2007 as the Certificate in Casino Management (Floor Operations), (CCMF). This unique course was the first in the world to offer casino table games supervision and gaming pit management training for people without prior work experience in the casino. The CCMF focuses on operational supervisory positions known as Table Games Inspectors, Pit Supervisors and Pit Managers. Mr. Rama explained that education or training in this area is realistic and relevant for both job seekers and casino operators. He foresaw that especially in the case of start-up operations, Casino operators will be hard pressed to find new employees who can assume supervisory and pit management positions with minimal training. In the 3rd quarter of 2009, ICG designed a world class programme the Diploma in Casino Management (Table Games Operations) (DCM(TGO)) to deliver implicit education for those who wish to seek a career in the casino gaming industry, as well as for experienced casino workers seeking to solidify their knowledge and pursue professional certification. No other casino-based diploma programme can match the combination of theoretical knowledge and vocational skills that it delivers.
Over the last few years, ICG’s graduates have been recognised and offered employment by Star Cruises and Venetian Macau. Upon graduation, many students have joined Star Cruises as Croupiers and Venetian has hired 15 into a special programme to groom Surveillance Officers. Currently the 15 are undergoing intensive training as Trainee Surveillance officers at Venetian Macau and plans are in place to recruit more of ICG’s Singaporean graduates into the programme to prepare them for Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands.
Mr. Dennis Andreaci the Vice President of Table Games Operations at the Marina Bay Sands was among the first to acknowledge the opportunity created by ICG through its courses. During his visit to ICG in June 2008, Dennis was convinced that ICG’s graduates were the perfect solution to fill the gap for table games supervisory positions. To date, more than a thousand students have successfully graduated from ICG and have gained employment in major operations around the Asia-pacific region.

From slot machine repair to casino management, casinos employ more than just card dealers. There are jobs in sales, marketing, finance, human resources, facilities management, community relations, Surveillance and security and more. Despite this the bulk of the jobs in the casino will be for the Table Games department which specifically runs the day to day floor operations. Employment opportunities are in abundance though for the Table Games department, experienced casino workers will be required to operate the games particularly in the Supervisory and Management positions. This would leave entry level and non-gaming specific jobs open for fresh and inexperienced employees. In many cases, suitably qualified and motivated individuals are expected to be drafted into Management Development programmes to groom future local casino managers. On top of that, many casinos promote from within and employees with good attitude and the willingness to accept greater challenges can expect rewarding career advancement. |
Casino Departments and Job Positions
Gaming occupational titles and duties vary from one establishment to another. Despite differences in job title and tasks, however, workers perform many of the same basic functions in all casinos. The table below summarizes the departments and positions in the various departments of the casino.
